Captive Light

The light broken into the colored shards of glass floods your being with the pure emotion of a cosmic, unearthly message and suddenly everything makes sense and cohesion, like a complete elevation felt when looking at stained glass windows in a dark cathedral. Bathed in a mature light, the work becomes alive and tells you about superimposed colors that fight for supremacy, about rivers of black that want to overwhelm fixed immortally in the glass and which, helped by the artist’s genius, have gently lain down on the smooth surface, in silent adoration. Detached from chaos and struggle, the work becomes the serenity of perfection in a space where only light creates shapes in the imagination, through the silent surprise in the static material.

About the artist

Ioan Nemtoi is one of Europe’s most popular contemporary glass artists. He works from his studio in Botosani, Romania – the hometown where he was born and spent his youth.

Graduating from the Bucharest Academy of Fine Arts in 1991, Nemtoi set out to make his mark on the world of glass art. And with his great skill and singularly unique approach to glassmaking he has certainly achieved that goal.

Nemtoi is especially renowned for his use of colors and the unique marbling effect he creates with multiple layers of molten glass. His exquisite glass art creations including vases, perfume bottles, bowls, candleholders and plates have been displayed in some of the most prestigious galleries and museums in Europe.
